It was only this evening that a mystery - I have pondered for years - was resolved. The Dire Straits’ song Tunnel of Love is about a seaside town near Newcastle in England. The lyrics ‘like the Spanish city to me…when we were kids.’ made me assume it was about somewhere in Spain. The Spanish City is, in fact the name of a fairground near Newcastle.
Somehow, this only makes the song that more beautiful.
What a time to be alive 'eh? I remember driving around in my 1.6L Ford Corrina with a serious stereo in it. Driving the back roads, listening to Making Movies among an eclectic mix of Steel Pulse (Handsworth Revolution), Ruts, UK Subs, Depeche Mode etc. Great! My girlfriend at the time dressed like the 'Toyaesque' lass in the promo. Similar figure. New Romantic 80's cusp. A great era. I really liked the communiqué LP by Knoffler and the boys, mainly because a mate liked 'em. In those days when we were skint we'd go around to each others homes and bring our latest and favourite albums with us. In return they'd get New Boots and Panties by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
Lovely
